The History of the Essex Society for Family History
Part 6 - The 2020's
2020 was the start of a new decade. It brought with it probably the biggest set of changes in Society history. It was a year like no other, overshadowed by the Covid-19 pandemic.
In March our physical meetings had to cease, the last one to be held was that of the North West Essex Branch. In May the Society held its first ever Virtual Committee meeting. The committee decided to try and run a Virtual Galleywood meeting in June, using Zoom and Helen Matten agreed to be the speaker. It went well and more meetings followed.
The West Essex and North East Essex Branches soon followed suit in September and the South East Branch took the plunge in November.
Due to dwindling numbers, the North West Essex Branch voted to close the branch at their AGM in September. The branch had run for 35 years. The Executive Committee decided to suspend the branch rather than dissolve it so that it could be resurrected in the future if the need arises.
