Introduction
All known collections of The Poor Law Settlement papers for Essex have been indexed by the members of the North-West Branch of the Essex Society for Family History. The complete set of indexes was originally published on microfiche, c1995 and later, in 2004, on compact disc.
Since that time, many of the documents have been digitised and the images have been made available online at www.essexarchivesonline.co.uk, as well as in the Essex Record Office at Chelmsford and at Access Points in Saffron Walden and in other locations across the County.
These indexes, containing names dates and location of individuals, are an important research tool for all family historians. They give an insight into the movement and relocation of individuals and families.
Please use these indexes as a finding aid to locate the original documents, which may contain additional information. The availability of documents may be found by consulting the online catalogue at www.essexarchivesonline.co.uk or by e-mail, EROArchivist@essex.gov.uk. Some of the documents may still be only available in Saffron Walden. For these, please contact enquiries@saffronwalden.gov.uk.
Although many Essex Parish Settlement Certificates that have survived and are included in this index, additional records may be deposited in the future.
