Our aims are to promote and encourage the public study of British Family history, genealogy, heraldry, and local history with particular reference to Essex and to promote the preservation, and accessibility of archival material.

The area covered by the ESFH is that of the old Essex county with the exception of 'London Boroughs' which are considered to be in the area of East of London FHS and Waltham Forest which is in the area of Waltham Forest FHS.

Our main meetings are held monthly in Galleywood. We have monthly branch meetings in Colchester, Harlow and Southend-on-Sea.

Meetings are open to both members and non-members but priority is always given to our members.

All our CD's and Search Services can be ordered in our online shop.

Research on a particular surname or family is not organised by the Society, but members with similar aims and interests can get in touch with each other through the Society.

Over the years we have donated to various projects and it is hoped that we will be able to continue to do this. Since the inauguration of the Society, there have been many members without whose time and work the Society would not have remained in existence and become the largest Society in Essex.
