Stan Newens

Arthur Stanley Newens 1930 – 2021

Stan passed away on 2 March at the age of 91.

Stan was passionate about his career and his causes, working for his community as a Trade Unionist, Member of Parliament and Member of the European Parliament. He served as M.P. for Epping,1964 – 1970, and Harlow, 1974 – 1983. As M. E. P., he represented London, Central, 1987-1999.

His other big passion was for history, illustrated by the wide range of organisations, both national and local, in which he was involved.

Genealogy was just one of his interests. He was an early member of Essex Society for Family History and a regular at West Essex Branch meetings until they were suspended by the pandemic in 2020.

Stan was a past President of the Essex Society for Archaeology and had represented that Society on the Editorial Board of Essex Journal since 2006.

Some of his other involvements in Essex were as Chairman of Harlow Civic Society, Chairman of the Gibberd Garden Trust, President of the Waltham Abbey Historical Society and President of the North Weald Preservation Society. He was a Vice-President of the Socialist History Society, and organiser of the annual Essex Conference on Labour History, at Witham.

As an author he wrote various pamphlets and books, including ‘A history of North Weald Bassett and its People’ in 1984 and his autobiography in 2013 ‘In Quest of a Fairer Society: My Life and Politics’.

Wherever he went, Stan gathered respect and affection. He was proud to call himself a ‘man of the left’, but he had friends and admirers across the political spectrum. The world is a poorer place without him.
