The Annual General Meeting of the Society will be held
in the Theatre at the Essex Record Office on
Saturday 27th September 2008 at 2pm.
As foreshadowed at the 2007 AGM a revised draft Constitution will be presented for adoption if members present at the meeting agree. A copy of the proposed Constitution in .pdf format may be viewed by following the link.

The Tutorial on 19th July is not now as advertised in the Essex Family Historian but is "Go Tell it to the Marines" with John YoungCD Review

FFHS Website Award 2007

The Essex Society for Family History website was again awarded the third place in the 2007 Best Websites competition run by the Federation of Family History Societies having been similarly placed in the 2006 awards.

New CD-ROMs available from our Postal Bookshop
Monumental
Inscriptions - Over the coming
months the Essex Society for Family History will be
producing
CDs to replace the microfiche of Monumental Inscriptions which we previously
offered for sale and including memorials to be found in other
graveyards in the same area which have been completed since the sales of
microfiche were discontinued.

All the CDs can also be obtained over the counter at our Research Centre in the Essex Record Office in Chelmsford and at local Branch meetings.
An index showing the availability of data on each church included in our Church Record List indexes is now available for the convenience of members researching in Essex. Is your particular interest included? A site providing photographs of many of the Essex Churches themselves can be found at http://www.essexchurches.info.
Postal Book Service - We offer a selection of titles of books about about Essex through our postal bookshop Many of these will make excellent birthday or Christmas presents - take a look if you are stuck for ideas for your Family History friends.

ONS VACATE PUBLIC SEARCH FACILITIES AT FRC
The Office of National Statistics (ONS) have closed their public search facilities at the Family Records Centre (FRC) Myddelton Street, London. Ordering of BMD certificates is now ONLINE only. The microfiche indexes of births, marriages and deaths needed to order certificates are still available in our Research Room.

Essex Freemason's Records -Southchurch Masonic Study Circle is engaged in a project to transcribe the surviving returns held at the Essex Record Office made by Freemasons Lodges as a result of the Unlawful Societies Act of 1799. The returns include Name, Address and Occupation of members and the details are being transcribed into a database which you can view at:- http://www.southchurch.mesh4us.org.uk/oaths.php Although by no means complete the records for 1799, 1895 and 1900 may be of use to members.

Internet access 1901 Census and Family History on Line (FHOL) - Vouchers, value £5 and valid for 6 months from the date of first use, are available from the Society's Research Centre in the Essex Record Office, from the Treasurer and at Branch Meetings. There is a 5% discount for Society Members on the 1901 Census vouchers ONLY. We regret there is no discount on the FHOL vouchers. Applications made by post must include a stamped and addressed envelope with the order and quote the membership number (if applicable). Vouchers can be used in the Research Centre.

Changes of e-mail address - Please remember to notify us of any change in your e-mail address by notifying our e-mail controller Many people trying to contact members with a common surname interest write to us saying that their e-mail has been returned and asking for updated address. We can only keep the addresses up to date if you tell us of any change. Remember you may be missing the person who can provide you with your missing link in your family tree.
